Andrzej Bąk, PhD. Eng. Master Mariner
Vice Rector for Maritime Affairs at Maritime University of Szczecin, Poland
A graduate of the Navigational Faculty of the Maritime University in Szczecin. He completed his master’s degree in marine navigation engineering in 1994, defending his thesis entitled “Simulation of the process of object detection by radar”. In September 1994, he was employed at the Maritime University as an assistant in the Marine Navigational Department. In 2006 he defended his doctoral thesis entitled: “Mathematical model of ship collision situation”. In December 2010 he achieved the rank of Master Mariner. In the years 2004-2010, he was Head of Institute of Marine Navigation.
He is one of the originators of creating an electronic map simulator (ECDIS – Electronic Chart Display and Information System). Until now, the simulator has received many improvements and upgrades, becoming the most modern simulator of this type in Poland. In 2008, he also contributed to the creation of a simulator for the evaluation and modelling of oil spills (Potential Incident Simulation, Control and Evaluation System – PISCES2). It is a rescue action simulator designed for preparing and conducting exercises in coordination with land coordination centres.
His research interests include navigation safety, integrated systems, imaging of the navigational situation on electronic charts and intelligent systems supporting the navigation process. The PhD thesis covered the use of Bayesian networks to detect and assess the navigational situation, and consequently to develop the most optimal solution in terms of navigation safety.
As a contractor, he participated in targeted scientific-research projects, eg. Developing an optimal pilot system solution for the navigation system and its implementation on passenger ferries; Construction of a pilot-docking system for LNG tankers and sea ferries; Integrated transport security system – ZEUS; Construction of navigational simulator of inland unit IN – Sim Inland Navigation Simulator, as well as in numerous works ordered by ZMP Szczecin – Świnoujście.
The conducted scientific activity is not only of a national nature, as exemplified by participation in international projects, including EfficienSea – Efficient, Safe and Sustainable Traffic at Sea, Baltic Master II, which was a key project in the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, bringing together all the countries of the region. He is the author and co-author of numerous Polish and English – language publications.
He was awarded the Badge of the Distinguished Worker of the Sea (2004), Bronze Medal for long-term service (2009) and the Medal of the National Education Commission (2011).
In his free time, he devotes himself to his hobby, that is photography, RC models and long – distance running.
